How do you protect the touchscreen of your car?

A touchscreen in your car is no longer a luxury but a standard. Whether you step into a Volkswagen Polo, a BMW X5 or a Volvo XC40 — the central display has become the command centre of your car. Navigation, climate, music, phone: it all runs through it. And that's precisely why, within a year, the screen ends up covered in fingerprints, scratches and glare.
The question isn't if your touchscreen will get damaged, but when and how badly. In this article we explain which protection methods exist, what they cost, and — more importantly — what they actually do.
Why car displays are more vulnerable than you think
Many car owners assume the screen in their car is as robust as that of an expensive smartphone. That's not the case. Phone glass (such as Gorilla Glass) is specifically designed for daily impact. Car displays often use a thinner plastic or glass layer with a matte coating on top, because manufacturers face cost pressure and the screen sits in a sheltered environment.
The result: scratches appear faster than you'd expect. The typical culprits are fingernails, rings, keychains landing on the dashboard, or simply a sleeve brushing across the screen. On top of that comes direct sunlight: UV radiation breaks down the coating of many car displays, causing matte screens to look blotchy after a few years.
Fingerprints are a different story. They don't damage anything, but they are annoying — and in strong sunlight they create reflections that block your view of the navigation.
Method 1: do nothing and hope for the best
The cheapest option, and the one most car owners choose until it's too late. Works fine if you trade in your car within three years and barely use the screen. Doesn't work if you want to keep the car longer or if resale value matters to you.
A scratched display lowers the estimated resale value of a car by 200 to 800 euros, depending on the brand and how visible the damage is. With premium cars this rises further, because trade-in value is more sensitive to interior condition.
Method 2: regular cleaning
A microfibre cloth and some display cleaner solve fingerprints, but don't prevent scratches. Important: never use glass cleaner with ammonia — it breaks down coatings. And avoid kitchen roll or old T-shirts; these can cause fine scratches on their own.
Cleaning is therefore more maintenance than protection. It extends the lifespan of a clean display, but once damage is there, you won't get rid of it this way.
Method 3: tempered glass screen protector
For smartphones, glass protectors are the standard, and some suppliers also sell them for cars. The problem: car displays are often slightly curved or built in a way that flat glass films can't handle. With curved displays (think recent BMW iDrive screens or Mercedes MBUX) tempered glass simply doesn't fit.
On top of that: glass breaks. A bag that hits the screen during braking can destroy the glass protector, and sometimes the underlying display along with it. For a car environment, this isn't the smartest choice.
Method 4: TPU film (self-healing)
TPU stands for thermoplastic polyurethane — the same material professional paint protection (PPF) is made from. On car paint this technology has proven itself for twenty years. In recent years the same technology has been applied to displays.
The benefits in a row. TPU is flexible, so it fits both flat and curved screens. It's self-healing: small scratches disappear through warmth (sunlight or a hand on it is enough). It doesn't break, so no risk of secondary damage. And modern variants have an anti-fingerprint coating, making fingerprints barely visible if at all.
The difference with glass is that TPU is thinner and more flexible. Touch sensitivity is fully preserved — you don't notice anything is on it.
Method 5: custom-made TPU film per car model

So what do you choose?
For most car owners, custom-made TPU film is the most sensible choice. The reasons:
It protects against scratches — the most common form of damage. It's break-free, so low-risk. It fits on curved displays which are standard in modern cars. And the self-healing property means the film maintains itself.
Installation takes about two minutes and only needs to happen once. That's an investment that almost always pays for itself when selling the car.
If you're unsure whether your car display is vulnerable: ask yourself whether you touch it at least four or five times a day. If yes, protection is not a needless luxury.
Three common mistakes
Mistake 1: A cheap universal film from Marketplace. Never really fits, leaves adhesive edges and is usually made of PET (a cheaper plastic) instead of TPU. No self-healing function and wears faster.
Mistake 2: Applying film to a dirty screen. Dust between screen and film stays visible for years. Clean the screen thoroughly and work in a dust-free space (a bathroom right after a shower is a trick installers use — fewer floating particles in the air).
Mistake 3: Expecting any air bubbles to be gone immediately after installation. TPU needs 24 to 48 hours to fully cure. Small bubbles disappear on their own during that period.
Conclusion
Protecting the touchscreen in your car isn't excessive — it's precaution. For a fraction of the resale-value impact of damage, you'll have your display in top condition for years. The combination of self-healing TPU film and custom fit is currently the most robust solution for modern cars.
